Question
Hello,

Approx. 2 months ago I adopted a kitten from a lady who was trying to take care of a few local cats that had been abandoned by thier owners. A while before that I adopted an older cat from another lady who was dealing with similar issues.

Well when I got the kitten it was living in this lady's small barn/garage and it wasn't in the cleanest of conditions but atleast she was trying her best. Anyways, the kitten had very dirty ears so I went to the pet store and go a solution to clean it's ears. It's gotten better but I still have to clean them on a regular basis.
Now I've noticed the older cat is getting the exact same thing in his ears. I wonder if this is some type of ear mite? The dirt is very crusty and dark brown/black and builds up very quickly. They are both indoor cats by the way. What can I do to ride them of this? and can humans catch this?

Answer
Hi Paul,

No, humans cannot catch this.  But, you might have to take them to the vet to get rid of the ear mites.  Maybe they will sell you something to get rid of it, but I am pretty sure he/she will want to see the cats first to make sure of his diagnosis.  Better to be safe than sorry.  If you don't get rid of the mites, it could make the cats deaf.  Good luck, and let me know if I can be of further assistance, I always like to help.  Barb
