Question
I just went to the vet, but he wasn't very descriptive. I was just wondering if you knew what it means when he said that my cat's "kidneys are hanging low"- is it something that I should be worried about? Is there anything I could do? I tried to google it, but the only stuff that came up was about kidney renal failure.

Answer
Hi Angie.  I'm afraid I've never heard the term "kidneys are hanging low".  I do know that kidneys in an abnormal position can be caused by growths such as tumors or fluid in the abdominal cavity that can be pushing them out of the way.  Neither of these is good, but most often, kidneys that aren't exactly where they are normally or are a different size than what they should be aren't indicative of a huge problem.  Most likely, this is inconsequential, and your vet just mentioned his findings for your information.  If your vet is a good and reputable one, he would have recommended blood tests, urine tests or an ultrasound if he suspected there was something terribly wrong.  One thing that never hurts is to give the vet a call and ask what was meant by what he said.  I am very exhaustive when it comes to definitions with my vets, and a good vet will be thrilled you've taken enough interest in your cat's health to ask questions.  Good luck!  And if you don't mind, I'd like to hear what the vet has to say in a follow up.
