Dear Karen

Hope you are fine. I would like to ask you on issue being occurring with my male persian cat of around 3 years or so.

1- His health is pretty much fine. One of my experienced friend said that it is due to the reason that he hasn't been mated so far. Isn't that? or is it necessary to mate him at this age?

2- Now a days he meowing a lot. He loves to go on the terrace of my house where he use to sit in an open air.  Now a days the temperature of our City Karachi is around 7-12 degree Celsius in the night timings and in the days it is around 15-23 degree Celsius. What would be the reason of his too much meowing?

3- He only use to eat his food i-e his biscuits (ME-O cat food, Gourmet Flavor). He doesn't drinks milk not even he sees any other thing of his eatable concern, which normally another cats loves to eat.

4- He don't even play with us, we tried to play with him several times but in the very beginning when he associated with us, he played a very few times but for the past 2 years he has completely left playing with balls or any other thing.

5- I also have a lots of pet like different parrots and sparrows but they are only limited to their cages, do they create any feeling of complex in him.

6- If I have to mate him, how old should be a female for him and will he fight with the cat if we bring a cat for him?

I am enclosing a pic of him for your kind reference, may be it helps you to answer in the best way. Your kind co-operation and expertise are required.

Regards

JB

Answer
Hi JB,

Nice looking cat. Cats usually are healthy. His health has no bearing right now on him not having mated. But it could do with him not being neutered. The temperature sounds like it is perfect. Cats meow for a number of reasons. Here's a good article about why cats meow. It gives some good tips on figuring out why they meow. You can try to understand why yours is meowing. One thing he might be doing is trying to attract a female.

I had a Persian who would only eat one type of dry food. So long as he is getting his nutritional needs met I wouldn't worry about his eating habits. Milk is not good for cats. They can't digest it properly.

The other pets in the cages won't bother him. I have a parrot and my cats ignore it. Don't worry about that.

You need to experiment with different toys to find what he likes to play with. Try a laser pointer. Most cats love to chase that little dot.

The one thing I would do for him is get him neutered. He will be much better off.
Here is an article with some good reasons for doing this

I think neutering him will help you with his problems. Good luck and take care.
