Question
I have a 2 year old cat who weighs about 12 lbs.  He currently eats Blue Buffalo dry food containing no wheat products and a small spoonful of Friskies special diet wet food daily.  He takes prednisone in the occurance of an allergic reaction.  About once a week sometimes more sometimes less he has a severe allergic reaction causing intense itching and swelling on different parts of the face and neck.  The vet ruled out fleas, and suspects a food allergy.  What is the best food to feed a cat with allergies?  I can't seem to pin point what exactly he is allergic too a couple times he has had a reaction after eating cheese he finds, but he reacts other times I don't think he ate it.  What do I do?

Answer
Hi Kathleen,  Sounds like your cat is doing well on the Bule Buffalo.
I would cut out the Friskies wet and do the Blue Buffulo Wet food along with the dry.

You can try the NuVET feline supplement
- just 1/2 teaspoon in the am and 1/2 in the pm.
See  here about NuVET - It's an allergy blaster for cats.

Please get this Feline onto the "NuVET Feline Formula"
- it is a powder you mix into some canned WET food daily -
or you can use a little cottage cheese.

NuVET Feline powder is taste-free.

For any itchy spots:
How about some NuVET Hot Spot Spray -
** give him a few squirts onto the areas he mostly is scratching or bites.
You can use this 1 time per day for itchies.
( Keep the hot spot spray away from the eyes)

I also know that many VETs will use Benadryl 1 mg per pound for cats that are itchy
or have any swelling.
You may want to talk to your VET about Benadryl usage rather than the strong/ harsh steroids.

Keep me posted.  I bet it is Environmental...
YOU may want to use the Natural Wheat Kitty Litter... ( it sometimes helps)
