Possible pregnancy?

Question

Tigger
I have a small cat, about a year old. I've had her since a kitten, so I'm familiar with her habits and body.
Generally, she's very thin. She's very small compared to the other female cats I've cared for.
Recently, her nipples have started to become more visible and her breasts are sagging, but are not filled.
Her stomach seems to have become tighter, but this could mean she's eating more than usual too. (She eats very little usually, just enough to keep her going so I give her treats and a different food separate from the others.)
She's much nicer than she was a few weeks ago. She's never been very social with people no matter what we do, but recently she's been rubbing up in our faces and laying with us in bed.
I also see her sleeping constantly.

Strange thing is, she slaps away everybody but her "mate" and I've never seen the only one capable of impregnating her getting near her like that. Her mate is neutered, and the other one is getting over an illness that was preventing us from having him altered as well.

I'm terribly confused!
All of my previous mothers had filled up when their breasts dropped, but hers have been down and empty for weeks.

Could this be a false pregnancy? Would a false pregnancy cause her stomach to tighten?
Or is there another non-threatening physical condition that would cause her breasts to sag?

Thanks for helping. :)

Answer
Hi Leanna, Thank you for the questions. My first reaction is to say "any cat that is unspayed is pregnant" as that usually is true !!
Also if your cat is not in heat I would assume she is pregnant.
Does your cat get out at all?? Is it possible a different male bred her? Being small or even being sick certainly does NOT stop cats from breeding. They would have to be pretty sick before they would hesitate to breed. Just because you have not seen her mate with the whole (unneutered) cat does not mean it didn't happen. She would not want him around her now, but when she was in heat she would have been receptive to any advances from any male and it could have all happened when you were out one day.
Cats certainly do have false pregancies and normally this is a sign of a problem with the female. Sometimes females are actually pregnant and then they reabsorb the kittens for reasons unknown. A false pregnancy looks very much like a real one for the first 6 weeks. Then at the point the cat should be starting to look HUGE and the kittens should be easily felt the cat stops getting any bigger and usually comes into heat.
It is unusual for your cats nipples to be hanging down when she is pregnant with a first litter. They normally HANG after they have been nursing or a day or two before delivering. All you should see with the first litter at this point, is that the nipples are pink and stick out a little bit. If they are hanging for no reason I would get her checked. You certainly don't want her to have something cancerous going on in them and let it go.
