hissing at nothing

Question
Hi;

Once in a while my cat Casey (3 year old spayed female) will spin around sort of chasing her tail and hisses, followed by a growl.  There is nobody around her to make her angry.  She does this once every few days.  It started about three weeks ago.  I've never experience this with my other kitties (who have since passed).  Casey is our only cat and she is an indoor cat.

Thanks,

Cindy

Answer
Cindy,

Yes, this can be quite problematic.  Even though she is spayed, this is breeding season and she would know that, although her hormones are not pushing her.

On the other hand, if there is a new cat in the neighborhood hanging around your house, this could trigger this kind of behavior.

If Casey does not do anything worse than hiss a bit and growl at nothing and does not threaten you or your family in any way, I would note it as a curiosity and all go on with their business.

If Casey gets more aggressive, than something else may be going on and a visit to the vet may be warranted.  If Casey has not had a physical check up in a while anyway, a full check up may not be a bad idea anyway!

Best regards... Norm.
