cat scratching himself

Question
Lately, I have noticed that my cat has been scratching himself alot.  He is an indoor cat only and I have 2 other cats that are not having this problem.  I have inspected his fur and do not see any fleas.  Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Adele, thank you for the question. Some cats have a flea allergy that means they only need to be bitten once and they get very itchy and scratch and chew for quite a while.. long after the flea has left. So, that is a possibility with your cat. He could also have allergies to other substances such as food allergy (check the ingredients on the food for corn, grains, etc) or a contact allergy from fabric softener on linens, or perfumes, air fresheners etc. Is there anything like this that would be new in your house?
