Question
WE HAVE A STRAY CAT THAT JUST HAD KITTENS, WE WISH TO HAVE HER NEUTERED AND KEEP HER, HOW SOON AFTER THE BABIES ARE BORN CAN WE DO THIS, THANKS MARY

Answer
Mary,

I would spay her after the kittens are weaned.  I am always concerned that, if the female is spayed while actively nursing, she may reject the kittens or have her milk dry up or something.  Even if the vet says it is unlikely that these events could happen, I have seen it!  In addition, even though spaying is routine and mostly safe, the female must be put under full anaesthetic, and there is always a bit if a risk there.  So, to be on the safe side, I would wait until the kittens are eating solid food.

You can wean the kittens at 4-6 weeks of age.  However, about 4 weeks after giving birth (give or take a few days), many females come into what is called a "lactation" heat.  She could be bred again at this time, so make sure she does not get out on you.  Most lactation heats only last about a week.

Best regards... Norm.
