mysterious cat death

Question
Overnight we have had a rash of mysterious cat deaths...a total of 7 cats (4 of which were kittens) were found dead in the yard.  6 were my neighbors and they were in her yard. My 2 year old cat was dead in my yard (some 200+ feet from hers.  The cats were soaking wet from the neck down.  Head was dry.  Any clue as to what may have caused these cats to die?  Poisoned?

thanks

Answer
I am so sorry to hear of this awful tragedy!  My deepest condolences go out to you.

Poisoning would certainly would be on the top of the suspect list.  I don't know of a single disease that would kill 7 cats all at the same time.  And aside from a badger, which may take kittens but is generally no match for an adult cat, I don't know of any animal that would kill a slew of animals and not eat them.  Cats killed by predators would show outside wounds, anyway.  Not sure why their bodies would be wet and their heads dry.  Are any of these cats available for an autopsy?  I would strongly suggest that at least one have an autopsy.  It's an invaluable tool.  If nothing else, it may give you some closure.
