Question
I just got a kitten about two weeks ago at a pet store they was giving them away free and two days ago i noticed that thick yellow stuff is coming out of her vagina. could you tell me if that some kind of infection or if theres something i can do to make it better.  thanks

Answer
Missy, yes, it sounds like an infection, and it might be a deadly one.  Cats and kittens can get vaginal infections that will go away with antibiotics.  However, it's also common to see them get a uterine infection called pyometra (most common in adults but completely possible in kittens, too).  This is when the uterus fills with pus.  It becomes so full that the uterus may burst.  The cat can rarely be saved at this point.  Even if the uterus does not burst, bacteria can spread to other organs like the kidneys or liver and kill the cat.  In general, the best treatment for pyometra is an emergency spay surgery.  So definitely a vet visit needed, and immediately.  I've had several cases of pyometra but have been lucky enough that all the cats were spayed or treated medicinally in time to save their lives.  Many of my friends have had cats die from it.  There is no at-home treatment for vaginal or uterine infections.
