Question
Hi,
I have 3 new kittens that are now 5 weeks old, the mother has been taking care of them really well, but in the last two days I have noticed the mother neglecting one of the babies, and the baby now has weeping eyes and stays to itself alot and doesn't play as much. I am very concerned, well actually I am very scared that the little one might be sick and I don't have the extra money right now for another vet bill. Please can you tell me if you can help me, I did notice that the weeping from her eyes seems to be yellowish in color. I just don't want to loose this little kitten, they are all very precious to me. Please help if you can.

Answer
Hi Melissa,

There can be a few reasons for the yellow discharge from her eyes. It could be just a cold. It could be a herpes infection. It could be conjunctivitis. If it is herpes,(not like what we get), it can reoccur in the kitten. You will need to give her special supplements to help prevent it from reoccurring.
You need to keep the eye clear of the gunk. Take a soft cloth and wet it with warm water. Very gently wipe the eye clean. You need to do this until it clears up. if you can try to get some sort of ophthalmic,(eye), ointment for the kitten. Tetracycline is great if you can get it,(on the Internet). Use that. I am giving you a recipe for kitty glop. Supplement her feeding with this stuff. Use a nursing botle and feed her this stuff twice a day. It is very good for sick kits and cats. Make sure the little one is kept warm. She should be okay with you doing this. If it doesn't clear up you are going to have to take her to a vet. Good luck and let me know what happens.

Ciao, Karen
