cats catching birds

Question
My male cat, 18 months old, healthy, well fed but he still catches and eats birds
when he can.  He's indoors at night but does go out in the day.  How can I
prevent this?

Answer
You can't.  Hunting is a natural instinct that can't be trained out of a cat.  The best idea is to keep him strictly indoors.

Short of that, you can try a collar with a bell on it to try to give birds enough warning for them to fly away.  However, many cats learn to walk so that the bell doesn't chime.  Some also believe the constant noise causes a cat stress.
