cat cleaning after birthing

Question
Found an abandoned pregnant cat(about 2 years old says the Vet).  She had 6 kittens.  It's been two days since she gave birth and she hasn't cleaned herself.  Is it alright to bathe her and when can I do so.

Answer
Have you had her to the vet along with the kittens since birth? They should all go. The mother cat and kittens should be examined by your veterinarian within 24 hours of birthing, and MomCat can, and should, be spayed as soon as the kittens are weaned.

The vet will be able to tell you what to do about the problem; I would exercise caustion since kittens are finding mom by sense of smell at this young age (they can't see yet) and you need to take care not to intrerrupt that. Also, it is possibel that she has cleaned but that she is experiencing some bleeding that will require vet intervention.

So the bottom line; please take mom and all kits to the vet and take it from there.
