cat allergy

Question
My indoor Bengal cat keeps licking the fur off of the back end of his spine and pulling off hair from his shoulders.  I have taken him to the vet twice and received steroids, which helped until the effects wore off.  They aren't sure what is wrong or what he is allergic to.  They tried frontline to see if it was fleas, even though they don't go outside.  His brother has exactly the same problem, but at a much lesser degree.  I have always wondered if it was a food allergy but don't know how to assess that since they eat about seven or eight different kinds of catfood.  How do I begin and how long does it take to get out of their system to move on to the next one?  I am at a loss as to what it can be and what to do.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Ginger,

I would start by getting him off anything with wheat, corn, and/or soy, especially glutens.  Youc an find dry foods that do not have these ingredients.  I am not a vet, but it sure does sound like a food allergy and those can be a bear to figure out! Given it a few wwwks to settle down and see if the overgrooming behavior stops.

Best regards... Norm.
