Kitten care

Question
My sister has been feeding two stray cats. Last night one gave birth to kittens, my sister managed to get her in the house and she is now quite contented in there. We also found the second has given birth approximately 2 weeks ago. She's a little more wary but will let us handle to kittens and stroke her. I would like to know if I would be able to bring her home to raise the kittens and them find new homes for them all or is the mother likely to get too stressed and reject the babies? I'm worried about them living outside especially as it rains a lot.

Thank you

Answer
Hi Angela,

If she letting you handle her and the kits you will have no problem taking care of her and the kits. She will be wary at first but will relax when she figures you mean her and her kits no harm. Just keep them in a room where there isn't a lot of traffic. Also make sure there aren't any places that she can hide herself and the kits. I would use a closet or a bathroom or a back bedroom empty of furniture. Set it up with a litterbox, food and water dish. Just make sure that you limit contact with a bunch of people right away. You want to develop the bond between you and her first. And continue to handle the kits. The reason for the mom stressing out is too much crazy people contact. Keep your voice quiet. Sit in the room and just watch. The kits will come to you. And get the mom spayed. If you think the mom can't be assimilated back into the house then let her back out. Make sure you feed her. And maybe make a shelter for her. Good luck and take care.
