Question

Jerome the Cat
Hi Karen.
Last summer on my daily walk I rescued a kitten from my Golden Retriever's mouth. He was probably dropped off (we live in the country). His eyes were badly infected and he was starving. I am happy to report that he is doing wonderful now and is the delight of our family. We were able to save most of one eye, and he has grown big and strong and is so much fun, a wonderful personality. He has even become a major contributor to the welfare of my family: he catches and kills (but doesn't eat) moles, which have plagued us for years. I have a friend whose yard has been taken over by moles, and his cat doesn't bother with them. So, finally, at long last, to my question, which is two-part:
1) What breed of cat is Jerome (pic attached)
2) Is this breed of cat prone to hunt/catch/kill?
Thank you, Karen :)

Answer
Hi Larry,

He is what is known as a domestic shorthair tabby. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_shorthair
The color pattern he has is known as the Mackerel Tabby pattern. Tabbies are great hunters. It sounds like because of the loss of his eye his other senses, (especially hearing), have developed more than normal. I would worry about him being outside without his complete eyesight. I would hesitate to let a cat with that disadvantage out. You should rethink about him being out. Read this. http://www.littleshelter.com/library/cat_indoors.htm

Jerome would be a lot safer inside. Think about it. Good luck.

Ciao, Karen
