pregn cat?

Question
I adopted last year a male and female cat one for my husband and one for my self.  My cat (the female) had gone into heat for the first time with no problem.  my husbands cat (the male cat) did not bother her.  I was conserned with this issue for I did not want my princess to get preg by Brier... They are brother and sister from the same litter.  I also did not want to fix princess just yet for I wanted her to have one litter be for I fixed her.  Princess went into heat again and I kept a close eye on her and Brier how ever I believe she is preg for she is getting large in the stomach area and she has not gone into heat since.  If by chance she is preg by her brother Brier will the babys come out normal?
and one other thing.  Brier still trys to suckle off princess and has done so since they were kittens.  I have tried to break him from this but to know end.  what do I do?
Both cats are at a year old now.

Answer
It's possible Princess is pregnant.  If she went into heat and your male cat is still intact, more than likely they did mate when you weren't around to see it.  A trip to your vet should tell you for sure.  Provided that Princess and Brier themselves are not inbred, the chances of their offspring having problems is relatively slim.  It's usually when generation after generation is inbred that problems start to develop.  In regards to the suckling, I don't think there's much you can do about that, and if Princess isn't bothered by it I wouldn't worry about it too much unless he's hurting her.  If she is pregnant you will want to put her on kitten food.  What I'm about to add I always like to say whenever the issue of whether or not to breed a pet is brought up.  It doesn't necessarily apply to you, but other people might read this.  Animals are not happier for having been mothers.  Breeding them is always for our benefit, never there's as pregnancy can be dangerous and is very demanding of their bodies.  Studies have shown that the sooner a female is spayed, the greatly reduced her chance of developing mammary tumors later in life.  It also negates the possibility of her ever developing uterine or ovarian cancer or infections.  In addition to the medical reasons why breeding should be strongly considered, there are ethical reasons as well.  We have so many unwanted animals in this world, that unless you are breeding for the purposes of bettering your pets breed you should really think hard on such a decision.
