Roundworms in cats

Question
I have a year old cat that I adopted from a SPCA.  He is wonderful but he has this huge belly.  It is the oddest thing I have ever seen.  I have found pictures of the pot bellied appearance and I think he has worms.  I have not seen anything in his stool and he does not vomit.
I got him round worm and tape worm medicine.  How long until his belly goes away?  I have to retreat in 10 days.  Should I treat him again then?

Answer
While worms may be the cause of a distended belly, there are other more serious possible causes. You should complete the course of medicines you have and do not treat again unless your vet recommends. You did take him to a vet for these medications didn't you? If you did not see a vet and purchased the meds yourself from a pet supplier, then I strongly recommend that you take him to the vet instead of trying to do this on your own. Your vet is in the best position to tell you if this is worms or something else and it is very important that the diagnosis be correct early on. For more information on other possible causes, which you can discuss with your vet please read the article located at http://www.petplace.com/cats/abdominal-distension-in-cats/page1.aspx For certain, you need to have your cat examined by a good vet now and if the initial diagnosis is worms but the belly remains, then further examination will be necessary.
