Can Cat Sense Depression in Humans?

My mother has depression. My cat acted loving towards her and she seemed to respond to him right before the darkest days. Can cats sense depression and help bring a person out of it?

There is a lot of good research that suggests that pets can sense illness, depression, and many other serious issues. I see no reason to think that your cat isn't trying to help your mom through the tougher aspects of living with depression. I hope that this helps.
