My kitten isnt gaining weight

Question
I recently adopted 2 8 week old kitten siblings from the pound. One of my kittens doesn't seem to be gaining very much weight, and I can feel her ribs and hip bones. I took her to the vet, checked for worms, etc. She's fine, the vet just said she needed to eat more.

What can I supplement her food with? Would adding eggs, or boiled chicken help? She is currently eating science diet dry food and half a can of wet food.

Answer
Andrea,

I'll bet she is teething and it is bothering her.  Look in her mouth and see if the gums are red and a bit inflamed.  See if your vet will put her on clindamycin (an anaerobic antibiotic) and a little bit if prednisone (a steroid) for the inflammation.

Also, you might try feeding her separate from the other kitten as he is probably eating faster (and hence more) than she is getting.

We often supplement with cans of Fancy Feast (very soft cat food) so, if she is teething, it will not bother her as much as the dry food will.  Fancy Feast seems to be very palatable.  If all else fails, the vet can give you some A/D, which is a prescription diet wet food, and most cats will kill for it.

Once a cat is down like that, it will take a few weeks for her to really put on the weight.  However, if she starts eating more and her attitude towards food is good you will notice some improvement pretty quickly.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards... Norm.
