reaction ehn a new kitten comes home from a old cat

hey, please answer my question if you can even though you may be very buisy! ok, we just got a new kitten today and we already have an old 2 year old cat. it seems as though our old cat dosnt mind the kitten really, but sorta does to. when we had them meet today,he started blowing through his nose really quick and hissed once. and then our kitten seems really afraid of our other cat, so he arches his back and tries to hiss. the only other thing is they will only be close to about a foot apart. and my question is what should id do?!! should i have them stay away from eachother? should they be kept together? should i have them involv in activities together such as eating and such? PLEASE TELL ME!! ireally want to keep this kitten , but i dont want my other cat to get mad and be unhappy for the rest of his life.!!
     sincerley, p.s what does all this agresive ness mean? what are they telling eachother?

This is normal behavior for you older cat because he is simply not used to having another cat. within time they will learn to accept each other and soon enough they will learn to like each other even though it may sound impossible. There may still be some agession in the next few weeks but in the long run things will change.Try playing with them together this sounds like a very good idea, but DO NOT feed them together take it one step at a time.....All this agression means that your older cat is just trying to stand his ground and claim his territory therefor all the agession.And the younger cat is just trying to hold his groud aswell and protect himself.THANKS!!!!
