my cats having kittens

Question
my cat is 9 weeks pregnant, she had slight bleeding at about 6 weeks.I put her on bed restuntill now and everything has seemed fine. This afternoon she started meowing and got restless i noticed some bleeding and waited. Soon i saw what i thought was a kitten coming, but it was a stringy piece of something which she pulled out and ate. Since then she has been panting a lot but nothing else seems to be happening. She has had something to eat. Do i need to be very worried regards Chris

Answer
Chris,

Somehow it sounds as if what she may have produced may have been a mucous/bloody thing called the "plug".  If you are worried, you might get here to a vet and have a look see.  9 weeks is the minimum normal time for kittens to be due.  65-67 days is more normal and 69 days is a normal maximum.

It sounds to me as if she is in the early phases of labor and, unless she is distressed, she should be OK.

It is also possible what she has produced is a placenta and that would be very bad if there was no kitten attached or on its way.

You just have to observe her, and, if she is still not doing anything after a couple of days, it would be off to see the vet.  If you are very worried and have that uneasy feeling about the whole business a trip to the vet may be warranted just for your own peace of mind.  If it is a false alarm, you have wasted an office visit, but, if there is a problem, you are there pretty early in the game.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards... Norm.
