Question
Jessica I read your answer and I already took action on your advice, asked my vet about the prescription, he told me we will start the cat on amoxicillin to get rid of the ear infection. He gave me the pills and I already had the chance to give him the 2nd dose yesterday. Unfortunately he should have to have it twice a day but he just comes once a day. I already ordered the Immuno- DMG to put it in his food and I will continue to give him "capstar and program" for flea control. Do you think It is the right thing to do??
I am doing what I can since the sedation approach as you mentioned, will put him in more danger than help because I have no way to follow him after he takes the pill.
Jessica, besides the immuno-DMG is there some other sort of vitamins  and a better kind of wet and also dry food I can give this cat to make him stronger?
I would appreciate your help and God bless you for helping us to help.
Dulce

Answer
You are doing the right thing for fleas - keep up the good work.

For his diet, I like a food called Taste of the Wild, personally, because this is a grain-free food.  Cats are carnivores and aren't meant to eat grains, but early in the days of commercial cat foods, a lot of grains were added so that people could keep cat food in a bag without it going bad, and also so that cat food wouldn't jam up the machines that the companies used to make it.  Grains also may provide some fiber and a little bit of nourishment, but they tend to cause more problems than nutritional value.  This can range from itchy ears and skin to diarrhea and urinary tract problems to obesity or weight loss.  Many cat foods, such as Taste of the Wild, are trying to correct the problems that we're seeing today because of all the grains in many cat foods.  I feed my own cats Taste of the Wild, which comes in both canned and dry (see www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com), but there are many other good foods.  I recommend to look for something that's grain free or low in grains, like rice, corn, wheat and barley.  Other good foods include BG (Before Grain), Evo, Felidae Grain-Free and Core.  But as long as you find something that has meat products for the first two or three ingredients, this indicates a pretty good diet.  Also, in a dry food, look for something with a good protein content - hopefully around 38% or higher.

As long as a cat is eating well, he won't usually need an extra vitamin, but if you're concerned he's not eating like he should, I recommend a product called Nutri-Cal.  This is the best vitamin and calorie supplement I have come across that doesn't taste so bad.  It's a gel that you can mix into food.  It has lots of vitamins and minerals, and it also provides extra calories to make up for lost nutrition if the cat isn't eating all his meals or needs to gain weight.  You can pick it up at some pet stores or vets, or order it online through many websites, including entirelypets.com.

If the cat is already plenty fat and doesn't need extra calories, then a good vitamin to give him would be Pet-Tinic.  The only problem here is that it doesn't taste as good as the Nutri-Cal, so you will have to see if he'll go for it.  However, if his weight is fine, this probably indicates he doesn't need any extra vitamins and that he's getting all the nutrients he needs in his food.  All cat foods available on the market are formulated with the vitamins that the average cat needs already in them.  Again, Pet-Tinic is available through some pet stores, vets and through many websites, including Entirely Pets.
