Question
Hi my cat has had four kittens about 6 weeks ago and while the two males are eating neither of the girls seem interested in any food i try and give them. they are both sill a very good weight but i dont know how to get them to eat. The other thing i am havng trouble with is getting them to use the kitty litter, their mother wont take them to the litter tray and so they are urinating and pooing all through the house and i dont know how to start them in toilet training

Answer
Teighan,

Congratulations on your new kittens. Be patient with the kittens who are not eating solid food yet, when their mom weans them they will get the hint and begin to eat solid food. Obviously if they are still nice fat little kittens mom is allowing them to nurse enough to support their rapid growth at this stage, just be sure that you have a good quality kitten food available for the babies and for mom as long as she is nursing. In my experience if you are using a non scented clumping kitty litter and a box small enough for the kittens to get into themselves you may have to do this a few times but watch the kittens closely. After kittens eat, drink or wake from a nap place them into the litter box and gently use a front paw to dig in the litter, the kittens will usually squat and use the bathroom. If the kittens don't immediately squat and go, gently place them back into the box and keep trying until they pee or poo. I find that repeating this a few times seems to turn on an instinctive light and the kittens get the hint, but I must remind you that the litter box has to have sides low enough for the kittens go use the box on their own or they will find other places to do their business. It would be kind of like telling us that the toilet is upstairs and there are no stairs to get to it even though we can see it. I hope that these hints help.
