Bedtime for two

Question
Thanks for your quick reply. Problem with shutting her in other bedroom is thats where husband and old dog sleep. He is unable to close that door at night. Could I shut her in the bathroom, with a litter pan, food, water, of course? When she jumps the meek cat I try to put her in there but after twice she got wise and runs from us after she knows she is naughty. Gads these siamese are smart! She ignores the other cat and times then jumps her a bit later. Should I try to stop her if I know she plans to attack? She is never fuzzed up or hissing at the other cat, just ears back, tail twitching and slinking up.Thank you, suzanne-------------------------

We have two cats, two bedrooms, two people and one old Westie dog. Cat #1 was found on doorstep 2 years ago and is a very submissive gentle gal. Cat #2 a Siamese was found on door step a few months ago. She became a very loving gal that wants to be in laps and with or near someone at all times. Cat #2 tries to claim entire house as hers and although we have litter pans in two separate rooms she continually will try to stop Cat #1 from using the larger area w/2 pans. She stalks & chases #1 w/o hissing but #1 gets scared and runs. Major problem is what to do at night. #1 always sleeps on the bed with me and she used to go to the kitchen during the night to eat frequently. I have resorted to closing the door at night for safety of #1, thus Cat #2 will soon go into the other bedroom and stay most of the night. I would like to leave the door open but how do I prevent #2 from getting on the bed and attacking #1. And how will #1 get to eat at night if she is afraid to leave the room. At times she definately looks to me to protect her from #2. HELP please. Sorry this is long, please feel free to shorten but sure others have same problem. BTW, both cats are spayed and declawed and vet thinks both under 3-4 years old. Thank you! Suzanne

Hi Suzanne.  Welcome to the world of Siamese ownership!  These extremely intelligent and loyal cats tend to be jealous and have a dark sense of humor.  They are certainly a delightful companion for people, but they can be overbearing with other cats who are meeker.

I believe what needs to happen, here, is that the Siamese needs to be confined to one room at night, away from you and the other cat.  It's only fair that the one who acts up be the one to lose her privileges to the entire house.  And since you know she sleeps in the other bedroom all night, it won't be much of a loss to her to be closed in.

I have a chocolate point Siamese that is a very nasty cat to other cats who submit to her bullying.  She has to be locked away in a cat play pen all night long.  It's the only way anyone gets a wink of sleep.  And I don't feel at all bad for her!  Siamese cats are intelligent enough to understand why they're being put away.  In fact, the majority of cats, even those who aren't as intelligently swift, will learn to behave themselves if they don't want to spend their nights secluded in a room.

I can't count the number of cats I've had to train this way for one reason or another.  It may take a few months, but they do learn.  And if they still refuse to behave, so be it.  They will continue to be locked away at night.  About half of them will whine and cry as if they're dying for the first several nights, but you have to ignore their pleas.  Cats don't care much for challenges, and they'll soon give up.

Answer
Honestly, I believe Siamese cats are smarter than some people!

Yes, a bathroom is absolutely fine.  But I have to warn you - keep your toilet paper under cover.  A lot of cats will unroll the whole thing or tear it to shreds.

You are in tune with her behavior, obviously.  You have learned to recognize the signs that she's going to jump on your other.  So definitely use that to your advantage.  As soon as you see her start, grab her and put her in the bathroom for half an hour.  This usually works to train.  If nothing else, it will break her train of thought and give your other kitty a break.
