best way to find homes for my kittens

Question
a mother cat I found abandoned at a park recently had kittens. The Kittens are now 7 weeks old and I'm very attached, but I can only keep one. I would like to find the best homes possible for the four remaining kittens and the momma. I see 100's  of ads in the paper everyday for kittens and I'm a little weary of that approach. Is an ad the best way or do you have more suggestions?  Also is 7 weeks to young?

Answer
Actually, as long as they are eating on their own and using the litterbox, kittens are old enough to be adopted out at any time after 5 weeks old. Generally 6 weeks is a safe bet and so you are beyond that already. As far as the best method, I have generally stuck to adopting kittens out through local veterinarians. I drove all around my area where I located about seven different vets offices and I approached them all and asked if they would allow me to post a sign and pictures. They all were fine with it so long as I had gottne the kittens their proper vet care - deworming, blood tests and so on. If you haven't done any of that, then you certainly should before you adopt them out. That way you are sure you are giving healthy kittens to new homes. I found that using vet offices to advertise was the best way. I got many calls - all people who have pets and take care of them - many folks who had recently had to put down or otherwise lost a pet. I agree with your misgivings about an ad in the paper. You have no idea who these folks are or whether they will care for the pet or even if they might be evil doers. There are people who try to get animals for lab rsearch. So defibitely avoid an ad in the paper. And once people start contacting you, ask for references, especially who their vet is, and check them out. If they rent instead of own their home, ask to contact the landlord to be sure they are allowed to have pets.  In addition, if you have a vet you regularly use, he or she may know of people who are looking for a pet, so ask. Also trust your feelings - if you feel something is off about someone, trust your gut feeling. Best of luck.
