Question
Hello,
I am the owner of a 105lb canne corso/newfoundlander cross. His name is Bo and he is incredibly smart for his age and a complete gentle giant. I love him very much and I can't bear the thought that his size may hinder his life span. He has already began to favor a leg which worries me becasue a leg or hip problem will be devastating to a dog this size (may I mention he is only 8 months) so he'll get a bit larger especially since he hasn't even reached his parents size.
Please if you have any suggestions on how I can prevent this by specific exercises, a special bed, the use of heat of cold sources. Anything please..... I am a devout animal lover and I also have two cats and a turtle and they all love my baby bo deeply as well, so does my family and boyfriend. I know you must love animals too so you know how much this hurts to know one is sick or may get sick. Anything you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
       Thank You,
                 Vina Riddle

Answer
Hi Vina!  Unfortunately, large dogs do tend to develop hip and joint problems, and it is very hard to see them go through it.  If it makes you feel any better at all, my little Shih Tzu has elbow and patella luxation and hip displaysia and is only two years old.  Luckily he's small, so keeping him at a thin weight will keep his joints in check.  For a large dog, surgical intervention is more than likely needed, and usually these surgeries do have an excellent outcome.
I can tell you what I do for my dog, which was recommended by a holistic veterinarian.  It requires a trip to your local health food store, and I wll give you the doses that would be sufficient for a dog Bo's size.
One Tablespoon of Flax Seed Oil per day (this can be drizzled over food)
One Boveine Cartlidge tablet
One Shark Fat tablet
The flax seed oil helps lubricate joints and everything else.  It basically keeps everything running smoothly.  Bo's stool may be a little soft until he gets used to the flax seed oil.  If he has diarrhea, you can cut back on the dosage and slowly build up to the tablespoon.
The boveine cartlidge helps regenerate healthy cartlidge, which will help keep those joints in check.
The shark fat tablets promote healthy growth of joints.
These are all 100% natural tablets and will not cause any harmful effects.  Once the tablets and flax seed oil are being given for a week or so, Bo's body will absorb them and use them.  You will see less limping and more running!  Exercise will be great for him.  It will build the muscles around his joints, making it more difficult for them to escape their sockets.
You may also want to have your veterinarian perform an x-ray to see how his joints are.  If his hips are already out of their sockets, surgery will be needed. I always recommend joint x-rays to owners of large dogs.  It is always the best thing to catch this as soon as possible.  Surgery for these problems are invasive, but usually have a wonderful outcome.  It is also possible that there are no joint problems and Bo just strained his leg, which was the cause of the limping.  Don't panic at all.  Bo will be perfectly fine one way or another, and will continue being the wonderful companion that he is!
Please keep me posted and let me know how he does!
Sending Bo many kisses,
Hilary
