Question
I have a boxer that is due to deliver any day now(not sure on exactly when she was mated)Today she drug my 7 year old across the yard to chase and then bite a kid passing on a skateboard. I have had in our front yard several times in the past few days with out a leash and kids have passed and she has barked but never chased or bitten any one. Help!!! Should I put her down? or is it just because she is going to give birth any day soon? My 7 year old is her buddy they lay by each other to watch TV, sometimes my daughter uses her as a pillow. I just need to know if this is normal pregnant boxer behavior. Thanks

Answer
Carlene -

Yes, the behavior you describe is sometimes displayed in pregnant dogs but not often. It is difficult for me to counsel you on whether or not you should have her euthanized, but one incident of biting is not usually a reason to put an animal to sleep.

You should talk with your veterinarian to determine if she is aggressive for medical reasons - then you can make an educated decision.

Be careful not to leave any child with your dog  unsupervised - especially after the puppies are born.  Your dog may be exceptionally protective of her puppies and may react when she feels her puppies are being threatened. I do not think it is wise to allow the children to handle the puppies at all - no matter how cute they appear to be.  Use good judgement when handling her puppies  - and remember to consult with your veterinary professional about her behavior.
