Question
My westie can't use his back leg much any longer due to the tendon slipping off the knee, and will require an operation to put it back.  Before I go through it all, I'd like to know all about the operation.  How long does it take?  Is it a simple procedure?  How long to recuperate?  Any information you give me will be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Generally speaking, orthopedic procedures require 4-8 weeks of recovery, meaning activity must be restricted to allow healing time.  The first few days after surgery will be the most painful for the dog.

I do not personally do these surgeries, so for specifics on the surgery you would have to ask the surgeon.  I would highly suggest a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon so s/he can answer any and all of your questions and then you can decide after talking with him or her if you want to procede.

Other options would be to try chiropractic adjustment or acupuncture as well as starting him on heavy doses of Glucosamine and MSM....about 750 mg of each twice daily...to help keep the joint lubricated.
