paper etc eating by cat

QUESTION: I read about cats eating paper.  My new kitten, about 7-8mos not only likes to chew and eat paper but just ate a whole dryer sheet before I could get it from her.  She seems fine, doesn't throw up or anything.  Could she be lacking in vitamins?  She only eats dry food now but I'm considering introducing wet food as well.  Any thoughts as to long term problems with her bad habit?

ANSWER: You need to call a veterinarian right now. Dryer sheets are toxic to cats from what I have read. I would get on the phone as soon as you read this.
We can talk about diets and other things once you find out if she will be okay from eating this. I use them to kill ants, so I know they cannot be good for a cat!!
Call the poison control center if you have to but call a VET right now.

Whew I am really glad Bette. I read all over the internet how toxic they are too cats. So put them way up or stop using them (I did).

Some cats and dogs develop a quirk known as pica. Pica is the eating of non-food items. While diet has been implicated, it is not a proven problem, however, cheaper diets will not help the situation.

I have fed and recommended Science Diet for over 29 yrs. I have never had a client with a cat develop pica. Now that doesn't mean they don't get it, but I have not seen it among pets fed this food strictly. Sometimes it's a behavioral problem, boredom, etc.

Switching to a better diet might help, adding some play time, toys etc will help also.
If it continues or she really makes an effort to get into stuff she shouldn't, then you really need to consult your vet.
