Urinary tract disease

Question
We have a 3 year old male persian cat who has been neutered since he was very young.  He recently has started urinating all over the house.  We noticed on Sunday, that his urine looked to have blood in it.  We took him to our vet, and she kept him overnight to check him out. They ran his urine, and found that he had a lot of blood in his urine, as well as signs of inflamation, but they did not find any bacteria so there was no infection.  We were given anti inflamatory medication and anibiotics in case it was going into an infection.  THe vet told us that she thought it was probably due to something stressing the cat, and we are having a hard time with that answer as nothing has changed in our home since we first got this cat.  We have the same animals, same people and the same basic lifestyle.  The Doctor told us to start him on a glucosamine supplement, as this tends to help cats with this problem.  Do you have any other ideas or suggestions, or sdoes this make sense?
Thanks.

Answer
Hello!

It looks to me as your cat may have FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease). This is very common on especially cats that have been neutered when they were really young. Have they checked the urine for cyrstals? He may have struvite or oxalate crystals in the urine, and these may be bothering him, causing the inflammation and bleeding too. These crystals can even block the urinary tract if they build up to little stones, and it may lead to more serious problems. I would advise a urine test for the urine PH plus a microscopic examination for the crystals. Please keep me informed on how it goes...
