Question
My nine month old Maltese does not want to eat his food which is lams smart puppy small and toy breeds. He was eating three handfuls per day, now he barely eats a handful.
Should I take him to the vet or should I give him something different? Or should I try mixing it with can food. Thanks for your time.
Sincerely,
Carla

Answer
The question is this: Is he showing signs of not doing well because of his lack of nutrition or is he getting all the nutrition he needs from a handful of food?

Some foods are nutritionally dense and thus a dog can get his energy needs met with less food.
I would not start switching foods as that is how dogs become picky eaters as well as causing gastro-intestinal upsets.

Weigh him now and weight him in two weeks and see if he has lost or gained.
If he is losing weight then write to me and we can discuss this more.
