Question
Hi Jana I have a twenty year old domestic shorthaired cat who has stopped eating. She has been seen by the vet twice and had kidney and liver functions which came back normal full bloods which were non remarkable and urine and feacal samples taken all normal.  Prior to her stopping eating she was wormed by a veterinarian with a tablet. Not sure which after we discussed the fact that I had always used the spot on wormers with her.  Over the last ten days I have offered her everything conceivable and the only thing she will currently eat is whole egg blended with milk and liver. This is not good in my opinion long term.  Vet suggested that she  may have an ulcer and has started her on zantac which is a peppermint based syrup for gastric ulcers in humans. She hates it and froths at the mouth when I administer it.  I have ordered some protexin in the hope that this may help. Any suggestions
Thanks

Answer
You are right, what you are feeding her is not a good thing at all. I have never heard of a spot on wormer of any sort- could you tell me the name? Why did the vet worm her if her fecal samples were negative for parasites?

Of course at 20 yrs old it won't take much for a cat to stop eating.
Can you cook the liver and egg at least? That would be much better for her to eat than raw. The milk isn't helping her stomach either because it is actually very acidic.
I know that Zantac works for humans but not sure how it works for cats. I know that Tagament is sometimes used for this and they tolerate it okay I believe.
Sometimes just a little rice in the food helps.

One thing you must consider Eva is that at this age, she might be ready to not eat again. If that is the case, she is telling you something.
I have told my clients for years that when their pet stops eating, it is time to give them the gift of ending their suffering. If they are suffering that is. Just wanted to let you think about that too.

From the fact that she is eating something tells me that she isn't ready quite yet to give up.
I would make her a meal of cooked liver, egg and some soft boiled rice and see if she will eat that. Mix a little tuna water in with it also- that might help.

I hope that you can get her eating well again and enjoy her a bit longer.
Please let me know how she does.
