Question
I have a 5 yr old Boxer that I got from Boxer Rescue 4 months ago.  After having him 3 weeks, he started itching his ears a lot, especially his right ear and also started tilting his head to the right.  His breath had an infection like odor to me.  I took him to the Vet.  They found one earmite, nothing else.  They treated him with one dose of Acarexx.  Two months later he still has his head tilt, his breath still smells like infection to me, his ears are itchy again, and now his skin seems itch also.  I took him back to the Vet.  They couldn't find anything.  They put him on Batril for 2 weeks.  After 7 days of Baytril, his eyes were swollen one morning and he had weird bumps on his chest, head and neck.  I called an emergency Vet(because it was the weekend) and I went online to see if he could be having an allergic reaction to the Baytril.  The Vet said probably not and online I read that spider bites can cause this type of reaction in Boxers.  I treated him with Benadryl.  He doesn't have the bumps anymore, but now his right nostril keeps getting plugged with mucus, and that side of his nose is dry.  The mucus becomes dry and hard in that side and I have to take a warm wash cloth to try to get it open and remove the hard piece of mucus.  But then it just comes back within about 6 hours.  Any thoughts?  I have already spent over $400.00 at the Vet in the past 2 months and none of it has really seemed to help.  Is his head tilt and mucusy nose related?  Thank you for your advice.  Leslie

Answer
A head tilt usually indicates a middle ear infection.  That could result in a mucous discharge, but that would have to be checked out to be sure. That requires a deep ear exam and possibly X-Rays.

Unfortunately, the nose should be examined with some type of rigid endoscope to see if there is a tumor or other type of growth in the nostril.
