Question
Dear doctor
I have a 7.5 year old German Shepherd male pure bred black and tan.
He had had persistent skin problems over the last one year like dry itchy skin, excessive dandruff and lump like formations, scabby skin etc. His vet kept saying its a hygiene problem and nothing else. last month he started having severe hair loss with very bad eruptions all over his body with a bad smell. The vet diagnosed mange and started a series  of 2 injections . It cleared up immediately within a week, but relapsed very badly within next week. He has had 4 injections now but the condition keeps recurring with bumpy crusty formations and excessive dandruff and hair loss. he smells too, plus he had a raw red patch on his hindside which has reduced with soframycin applications.
I live in India and we have thousands of stray dogs in my city. he must have picked it up from outside, as we maintain utmost levels of hygiene at home.
the doctor wont tell us what injections he is giving, and are still continuing the treatment. The doctor says it is not a completely
curable disease, but will have to be kept under control with the injections.
but could u tell me if there is a standard treatment for mange and is it a completely curable disease? we dont know what kind of mange it is, but going from the symptoms and what i've read on the net, it sounds like sarcoptic.skin scraping was not taken. currently since the condition started, we are using a hydrogen peroxide based shampoo on him recommened by the doctor. i would be grateful if you could tell me the standard protocol and anything else i could do to clear his condition. should we also consult other vets, since the current one should have diagnosed this condition much much earlier when the initial symptoms started, rather that when it became very obvious.

Other that this, the dog is in good health and very active, good appetite etc.
thanks a lot

Answer
Hello there..

I do not know the law jurisdiciton in India, BUT here in the USA, not telling you what your pet is getting is ILLEGAL,

Mange is cureable. The most common treatment is called IVERMECTIN injections. Which is a pig drug, but works really well in mange cases. They also tend to burn.

your vet NEEDS to do a skin scrape and he also needs to run a fungal culture with a DTM plate (not a black light) to rule out ringworm.

He should also be on a product called REVOLUTION. this helps with mange, fleas, and many other parasites.

in my opinion. get a second vet opinion out there.  your vet sounds very sketchy.

good luck
