Prince Charming

Question
Hi,
Prince Charming is my tuxedo cat.  He will be 8 years old the end of this month.  I adopted him from the SPCA when he was about 4 months old.  He was nuetered shortly after, I think it was at 6 months of age or so.  It has been an interesting ride to say the least.  We were told that he and his siblings were found wondering along a stretch of highway near a town I was living in at that time.
My daughter seems to be ok at times with him now, and was at first when he was little.  He is now close to 18lbs.  Not fat, just long and thick.  He is strickly indoors and always has been since with us.
Prince has some issues...he does not like men, and tends to attack for no apparent reason, sometimes drawing blood.  I don't think he does it to be mean, and everyone is afraid of him except me. lol  He is my baby and will cuddle with me on his terms.  He has attacked me as well, but not to the extent as others.  Its more of a chase sort of a thing, but sometimes seems like a "leave me alone sort" of a thing.  I think...he was taken from his mother to early and was not nurtured long enough...just my theory.  Could this be correct?
I have another question...being indoors, and being so big and somewhat difficult to handle...even for the vets, I tend to limit his visits.  They become very stressful for him and can be somewhat dangerous for the vet. lol
I need a way that is safe for everyone and my doors for him to scratch to wear down his claws.  He will not touch the traditional scratching posts as I think he is just to big and they fall over.  So he goes for my doors and door jams.  The landlord isn't to happy about it. lol  Hope you have some ideas.  He is just to big and to fussy for even me to try clipping.  Yes, he would attack me if I tried.  If he wants attention, he comes to me and thats how the relationship works.  I think thats why he tolerates me more than anyone else, I don't force things on him.  Besides...I'm his primary care provider, I feed him, provide water and change his litter. lol
Sorry this is so long, hope you have some suggestions.  My husband can't stand my baby, he calls him "Mr. Attitude" and my friend calls him "The Devil".
Thanks,
Tia

Answer
Hi Tia!  Funny thing...my mom just adopted a little main coone kitty and named her Tia!  That's such a pretty name!
Anyway...Mr. Prince Charming...
Although he has been with you since he was young, he was a feril cat.  He lived outside, was probably a stray, and will always have that wild instinct.  This is just basically his personality and I don't think that you will get anything different from him.
You may want to try a cat tree.  I have five cats and they all have their claws.  Drs. Foster and Smith have cat trees for sale...they may be a little pricey, but they definately work in keeping the kitties' nails trim.  Here's a link to the one I have.

They are very stable and won't fall over! The cats love it too!
Hope it helps!
