Question
I have a 9 year old Mini Schnauzer.  Yesterday I took him to vet for a nail bed infection. He has had numerous nails removed over the years, no apparent reason.  It was swollen to the size of my thumb. They soaked it and could not remove it but put him on 2 medications.  One Previcox 57 mg and Baytril 68 mg (he weighs @ 20 pounds, I know not so "mini").  He received a form of Baytril in a shot before I took him home and within an hour and half began having a seizure. He starts acting like something is stuck in his mouth, then he apparently panics and hysterically runs sideways until he hits something, falls and foams at mouth, urinates all over himself, but his eyes never close and he becomes stiff and shaking. It last about 2 minutes, then he comes out and looks at us confused but he snaps out of it quickly. Today around lunch, I gave him the previcox and half the baytril (he was not wanting to take it) and within and hour and half, another seizure episode, seemed to last a little longer. Vet said to stop all medications until tomorrow. Tonight at 10p.m. he has another seizure. Could this be from the Baytril? How long does it stay in the system? If it is medication, and I give it time to get out of his system will he stop having seizures? It is a horrible thing to witness. Please help.

Answer
Most likely a reaction to the Baytril--very odd, but definitely possible.  It usually is given once a day, so by 48 hrs it should mostly be out of his system.  If the seizures persist beyond a few days after the medication, then I would suspect there is something else going on, and he should have blood work.  If the infection is severe it could be affecting his other organs.  I would recommend Clavamox or Cephalexin for the infection as I would avoid any floroquinolone (orbax, zenequin, etc).

You can get RESCUE REMEDY at the health food store and give him a few drops to help relax him.
