Are ferrets o.k for a continuing care facility?

Question
I am a public health officer, and am wondering if you think that it is acceptable if ferrets take part in a continuing care facilities pet therapy program?

Is there a disease transmission potential?

How are they in comparison to other animals that have been regular participants in pet therapy?

I appreciate any information you can offer.

Answer
Hi Steve!

Contact and do a search for The Delta Society.  They deal with all types of animals for certification for pet therapy programs.

I do not see why not a super tame ferret can do this. BUT ferrets do need to be vaccinated for distemper and rabies, placed on flea control and above all... be potty trained.   They would also need to be dewormed on a regular basis.

There are all sorts of animals for therapy. Dogs, cats, mini ponies, llamas, rabbits, birds... you name it. It just takes the right person to do it.

Good luck!
