Tonsillitis in my dog?

Question
Hello. My dog's tonsills became infected and after numerous medicines which didn't work, the vet removed the tonsills. (After 5 months of alternate options.) Before the surgery,Abby (a Pom) was continually licking, coughing & swallowing. I was looking so forward to the surgery so she could be free of those symptoms but it's been a week today that she had the surgery and not a thing has changed. I'm so frustrated and I don't know now what's causing the problem. Please help. Any ideas?
Thanks so much!
Wendy

Answer
I would recommed a culture of the area to see if it is indeed bacterial related or a trans-tracheal wash.  Dogs do not usually have problems with their tonsills.  Small dogs very commonly have problems with collapsing trachea and heart disease which can cause coughing.   Are her lymph nodes normal in her neck?  If not, I would recommend an aspirate to rule out cancer (lymphoma).

Without seeing her, I really can not give too much help.  One thing I would try, however, is getting her on an all-natural diet--one that is free of dyes, by-products and preservatives to see if this helps her body get healthier.  Some good foods are Prairie www.naturesvariety.com (I feed my cats this brand), Innova, Solid Gold, Verus, Precise, Eagle Pack, Royal Canin, Wysong, Wellness.  AND the other thing to do is to boost up her immune system with Transfer Factor www.transferfactor.com  This is isolated from colostrum (the first milk) and has helped many pets and people fight all kinds of diseases.  You can give her the human capsules or the specially formulated Canine Complete Powder.

Good luck,
