Diarrhea?

Question
I have four kittens - about 9 weeks old.  2 of them seem very healthy and don't have any problems.  But the other two are suffering from diarrhea.  They are all still drinking and eating.  But the two with diarrhea are leaving a nasty mess all over my house.  What could be causing this diarrhea?  And what can I give them to help clear it up?  I know Pepto-Bismal is a human medicine but if I gave a little to them - maybe put it in their food - would it help?

Answer
Hi Carol!  More than likely, the diarrhea is probably caused by intestinal parasites, which is very normal for kittens.  Next time they defecate, take a small sample over to your veterinarian for testing.  Your veterinarian will then be able to identify the parasite (through microscopic imaging) and treat accordingly.  After the medication is given, it only takes a few days for the body to rid itself of the worms.
Pepto-Bismal may not be the best thing for kittens this young.  I would, instead, recommend feeding them boiled chicken (boneless/skinless/spiceless).  Boiled chicken is very easy on the digestive tract and will give their tummies a rest.  You can let the four of them eat this for a few days...because the other two will be jealous!  The chicken is very bland, so if this diarrhea is due to a stomache upset (abrupt change in food, ect.), it should show much improvement by decreasing, or eliminating the diarrhea.
I hope this helps and let me know how those babies are doing!  I am such a cat lover, having 5 myself, who all have my husband and I wrapped around their little paws.  Even our dog is wrapped around their paws hehe.  Cats are such wonderful animals and companions....I can only imagine the fun you are having with 4 kittens!
Give them all bunches of kisses for me!
