Mometamax to treat a burn?

Question
Ten days ago I tripped over my 6 month old mix breed labbrador, spilling boiling water on her shoulder. Her name is Coco and she is 27lbs.(I got her when she was 2 months old from an acquaintance, who stated she was "turning her dog and the puppies in to a shelter")After consulting with our vet and administering first aid she appeared ok.The area was a little swollen but nothing else. She didnt even flinch when I touched the area while checking on her. Then a week later while playing with another dog. The fur covering the area(approx. 1 inch wide and 2 1/2inches long) came off revealing leathery looking skin. Our vet said that I should clean it with betadine, cover it, and  watch for signs of infection. Coco frequently would scratch the area and remove the bandage even though it caused her pain. Her wound did get infected so I took her to the vet the next morning. The vet removed the dead, leathery looking skin and cleaned Coco's wound with Nolvasan solution, gave her a Baytril injection and applied Mometamax 15g topically. I was sent home with oral Baytril 68mg "1x daily",Nolvasan solution and Mometamax to "apply up to twice daily until the wound heals". Tonite I noticed that "FOR OTIC USE IN DOGS ONLY",is printed on the box. I tried to research whether this medication has other uses before getting alarmed but I've only found it prescribed for ear infections. I'm a little concerned that my dog isn't getting the correct treatment. Coco is up to date on her vaccinations, healthy, energetic and has no health problems. She did however recently(approx.1month ago)get over Kennel cough. She picked it up when she started doggy daycare. She is the first dog I've owned, it was explained to me that kennel cough was just the dogs version of a contageous cold.I would greatly appreciate your oppinion and advice on this matter. Should I continue this treatment or ask the vet for a dfferent treatment? I would also like to know what side effects I should watch for with any of the prior mentioned products Coco is being treated with.

Answer
While it is not unusual for a vet to use a product off-label, this one confuses me because it contains an anti-fungal, a mild steroid and an antibiotic.
The antibiotic in it is a very good one so that could be why he is using it. We have used an old ear treatment called Panalog for years on wounds and other things. They don't make it anymore but there are other brands with the same ingredients.
So although I wouldn't worry about it being used, you might want to ask why they like this drug over others that are more common for this type of wound.
What happened to CoCo is a good example of how much damage can go unseen under that fur. We get dog bite wounds in the same way because people only see a puncture and have no idea what kind of massive damage those teeth cause under moving skin.
I am sure she will be fine but I would call if you are concerned and ask the above question.
