Question
QUESTION: Hi,  My 6 yr old lab was put on iams low residue food from the vet a couple years ago due to lose stools, gas, and anal gland problems.  I thought the glands problems were caused by the lose stools, not an ingredient in the food its self.  In June they changed to Hills Prescription I/D and he's been having alot of problems with the glands again.  One in particular has scar tissue from a previous abscess.  Could an ingredient in the food be causing the problem?  the gland with out the scar tissue is still draining normally.

ANSWER: Hi Kim - yes, let's fix this kid up!
Use the old food brand and the new brand //// do a 50/50 mix on them.  After about 2-3 months you can go 100% the I/D brand....

I want you to get some Kelloggs All Bran Cereal and give him 3 tablespoons per day in one of his meals... Every day:  this will help his anal sac and stools...
YOU can alternate with metamucil wafer cookies - One day do the All Brand and the next day rotate with 1 metamucil wafer cookie / apple flavored.  ( go back and forth like this)

A must is this supplement : NuVET Plus - The BEST immune System Booster and Digestive Aide in the Country
He will need 2 per day for the first 10 days, then you can drop him down to 1 per day...YUM YUM good NuVET wafers
Only about .55 cents per day - once he is on one per day

Thousands of Lab breeders refer NuVET Plus to all the new pup parents: For a life time of health and wellness... Helps to protect your lab from joint problems and arthritis, too.

QUESTION: Thanks you for such as speedy response.  He had his glands expressed in May, changed food in June, glands expressed in July, and again 9 days ago.  This  time there was no relieve after the expression.  He's been biting his rear end, chasing his tail, you can tell it's bothering him quite a bit.  A friend dropped off a small bag of Alpo last month and I was giving it to him as a treat, because he liked it so much.  Just a hand full on top of his food.  (he don't really enjoy the vet food)  his poop has been hard, so I didn't think it was causing a problem.  he's been off the Alpo for 2-3 days now, I'm thinking that it may have been something in it causing the itching, just from the info I've looked up on the Internet.  The Tech asked me how long he had been bothering with his butt when I brought him in because it looked red & sore but he'd really only started with it that morning.  Now putting it all together I'm thinking he was having a reaction from the Alpo.  He seems better today.  Do you think that the Alpo could have caused the terrible itching?

Answer
yes, I do..  also, he may have environmental allergens to pollen, grass, dust, trees...
Many things you can't change..

Please place him on some good supplements... You want to keep him around a long time and give him great health...
