fiv positive looking at dental surgery

Question
I have a 7yr male cat that is fiv+.  He has a tooth infection that is now affecting his eye, the vet gave me meds for the eye and said get the tooth removed.  He basicly said the cat won't make it due to the fiv, but if "I love him, try the surgery" and "This is probably the beginning of the end for him."
I now have an appt with a different vet office tomorrow.  I want to do right by my baby and I don't want him to suffer.  How hard is dental surgery on a fiv+ cat?  Besides the tooth and eye, he's a very happy kitty, he eats very well and never not uses the lit-box, he still cuddles for hours and hours on anyone's lap, he's really good natured.
What should I ask this new vet and do I tell them what my vet I had for years said?  It dosen't seem right to euthanasia over a tooth or two but where do you draw the line between your not wanting to let go and being humane to your cat?  I guess I really need to know what questions to ask the new vet that would be in the best interest of my cat.  Any help would be really appreicated.

Answer
that is BS that you vet wont do a dental on an FIV positive cat. We do them all the time.

what concerns me is his method of sterilization. Sounds like there is a big likelyhood of contamination that he does not want to deal with. Thats why all dental packs need to be sterilized induvidually. :)

Get a new vet!

Have bloodwork done on him to make sure his kidneys and liver look good, and make sure your new vet intubates him and places him on gas anesthesia with IV fluids :)

If I was you, I would take him to a cats only vet for better care and get a better diagnosis and a dental. :)

Euthanasia is out of the question. Get your baby the care he deserves.
