Question
Hi..our pet had chronic ear infections and was diagnosed as hypothyroid. He's now on thyroid
medication and his hair is growing back in etc. We expected that. But we notice that he is also defecating more frequently and in general, asking to go potty more often. Is this normal as the metabolism ramps up? He's a 65 pound Labrador mix...6 years old. Thanks...

Answer
Thyroid medications should not affect the bowels. In fact, when the bowels are more active, they actually have more chopping motion so they have better digestion.  The other type of motion of the bowel is the propulsive motion, which makes the bowels evacuate.  Ask your vet to check to see why the dog is defectating more often.
