roundworm in cats

Question
I just got a 1 year old cat from a woman who had more than she could care for.  He seems in good health but she told me he was due to be wormed(last worming was 9 months ago)  He lived partially oudoors and had been eating mice.  I had his stool checked which was positive for roundworms.  He had a dose of wormer last week and is due for the second dose next week.  My question is if this will be cleared up easily and how often he should be wormed from now on?  I plan to keep him indoors.  Also, any risk to us?   We had him for 2 weeks before getting him wormed.

Answer
Hi Sue,
Sounds like you have him on a good deworming schedule. Roundworms are a very common intestinal worm. They can get these worms from the mother's milk as well as rodents. After this deworming and one more fecal (poop) exam you should be able to have him dewormed every 6mo to once a year. If he goes outside every 6mo. If he is strictly indoors yearly.
Humans can get roundsworms. You get them usually from contact with the infected fecal material. To get roundworms you would have to swollow the roundworm eggs. So basicly use gloves when you clean up his feces or make sure you wash you hands throughly. You and your family should be fine. Take care and good luck with you new cat.

p.s if he is not neutered you should do it ASAP.  :o)
