Question
I have a diabetic minpin, female, 9 years old.She receives 6 units of Humilin N twice a day. The vet recommends that I feed her science diet w/d, though she is not overweight. My problem is that she hates the stuff. I have been mixing it with her old food(pedigree), but she picks out the old food and does not eat the science diet at all. I can't not feed her and give her a shot.I was reading about some natural foods like Eagle Pack and Solid Gold. I was wondering if these were good for diabetic dogs and if not do you have any advice on how to get her to eat the w/d?

Thanks

Answer
Hello Jeanne -

I honestly don't care for Science Diet foods for pets, it caused many problems with kidney stones and genito-urinary concerns in dogs and cats. Your pet may not be eating it for a reason. I have 3 (three) clients that have these concerns from giving their pets Science Diet for an extended period of time. You may want to research this food online and really see that is has been causing more harm then good to a lot of pet owners.

If you decide to keep her on the Science Diet you could try to add a little Garlic powder to her food. Garlic is an anti-microbial and will actually assist her body with fighting infections and bacteria. Don't be afraid to sprinkle it with a heavy hand, dogs love Garlic and she should eat it right up. The only drawback to adding Garlic to her food is flatulence. It may be a little stinky but the Garlic is doing its job by helping her internally. Garlic is safe and effective to use long term and will also help to build stronger immunity within her body.

You could also try adding chicken or beef broth to the blend, it will mask the taste and should increase her appetite to want to finish it. You can mix this with the Garlic powder as well.

The other brands you mentioned are fine, the more natural the better. You can add a supplement of fiber to your pets food which will work the same way as the Science Diet only naturally and will not harm your pet long term. It is cheaper too. You may want to consider keeping her on the Pedigree and just adding dietary supplements which are natural.

There are a few supplements that really help pets with diabetes and that have been proven highly effective allong with the insulin shots.
