injured cat foot

Question
My 10 mo. old cat was in a tree for 52 hours-couldn't get him down! When we got him down we noticed he had a sore rear foot- appears to have torn a claw- that was bleeding only slightly. He is limping, altho less today. His toes are swollen, and also the pads of the foot. I have done warm packs, and peroxide and he is frequently cleaning it himself. He is alert and eating fine. Slight malodor but no drainage. At first the claw wouldn't retract but now will. Any home remedies I can do to keep him from needing to see the vet and getting antibiotics?
Thanks,  Sandy

Answer
Hello Sandy -

52 hours, my goodness, I would be grief stricken !

First, watch the amount of Peroxide you are using around your cat. Peroxide in large doses (especially if taken internally, which he is doing by cleaning himself) can be harmful to cats.

I am concerned that there is no drainage. If the toes and pads are swollen then there is a good change that there is puss and infection being held into the foot. Although, the claw is retracting, which is a good sign, the infection still needs to get out. Do not attempt to open the sore yourself, this needs to be done by a vet. Some pets will scratch the infected area which will cause natural weepage, if this occurs, keep the area clean with warm water. You may wash the area with Golden Seal. This herb is excellent for washing open and infected wounds and is known for its fast healing properties. It also helps to rid the body of infections.

To help infection pass through the whole system, add a supplement of Garlic powder to his food. Garlic is a anti-microbial and will help to fight and kill bacteria and infection present in the system. Cats like the flavor and he should eat it right up. This is best given with wet food or with a watered down dry mix. This is excellent and safe for long term use and will be benficial to over all health.

There is a "natural" antibitoic that would really benefit your pet called Colloidal Silver. Colloidal Silver has been used for centuries to treat various illness and diseases plaguing man and beast. There is a lot of information available online about this product, you will be amazed at its benefits and cures. You can apply the liquid topically on the wound and also administer it internally. It will kill infectious bacteria in about 4 minutes. Now don't think that you are cured in 4 minutes, it takes a few applications and the healing time is cut down significantly and does not allow for infection and bacteria to spread. I manufacture this product and offer it in my practice. I can also send you some information about it if you would like.

If the toes and pad are still swollen in a few days, a trip to the vet is recommended. The vet will aspirate it and will be able to release the puss and make sure the nail is properly retracting for adulthood. It sounds as though your kitty is in good spirits which is a good sign just keep an eye on him and if there are any major changes in diet or behavior take him to a vet immediately.

I hope this information has helped you and your pet.
