Question
my male 3 l/2 year old maine coon cat started with a "bug" 2 weeks ago. Vomit 3 days and then diarreha. When I noticed after 3 days lethargy, was a Sunday morn couldn't call any vet. Thought I detected "hot" head, fever? I asked over the phone a vet (14 years) assistant I know and she said start acidoulphous -yogurt and get to vet. Sunday eve no fever and Monday no lethargy. I used natural pet digestive aids -health food store and probiotic powder sprinkled in his water. He feels better and no vomiting over one week now. Although stool is very soft and color of food (colorless), compared to his brother from same litter, who did not get the bug. I'm afraid it was from a dish in the sink with standing water for a day and perhaps bacteria. I'm extremely worried about the lengh of time this has gone on. He normally weighs 11 pounds and seems as though his ribs are sticking out some. I'm very concerned since it's two weeks now. His behavior is back to very normal, playing, etc. If it was bacteria, how long does it take to clear? I don't like to give antibiotics.
Thanks,
Carol

Answer
CAROL WROTE:

Thanks so much. I did go to vet and he has parasite infestation; did lose weight. It's contagious giardia and I have to follow with meds for 3 weeks. There is so much to learn about parasites; I'm learning and I'm praying my precious kitty is going to be OK.Giardia is very serious. Thanks for your help.

So glad you did take him to the vet.  Continue the probiotics... it is worth it.   Yes, giardia is serious but very common, too.
