stye in chiuhuahuas eye

Question
I have a 3 year old Chihuahua who is healthy. He's developed a problem with his eyes. I have had him to a vet who diagnosed the problem as a stye and one other allergen related term. Anyway, he's been on antibiotics for over a week and he's no better. He takes two types, one oral and one which includes a steroid, applied like a cream directly to the eye. It seemed to inflame the eyes worse (this is now in both eyes) so I stopped giving it to him. How long does the antibiotic take to work? Is there anything holistic I can do for him?

Answer
Hi Joyce,

I wrote a revision for how long to use Cod Liver oil internally...(5-7 days only)
Good you stopped using steroid cream if it was only making eyes more irritated.
A stye is a bacterial infection within an oil gland located on edge of the eyelid. Since you are giving antibiotics, i would be also doing very warm compresses with affected area 4-6x's per day so it can come to a head and drain.
If it does drain while you are using compress then use cold compress to seal and close skin.
Sometimes it will just dry and reabsorb like a pimple.
Be sure compresses are clean and you are not transferring any contagions from eye to eye. I use fresh piece of gauze soaked for each eye each time. Be careful not to reinfect bowl of warm water, rather add water from bowl to compress.
I would also:
Add 1/8 tsp of cod liver oil to diet, REVISION - Limit cod liver oil  added to food due to high vit a content to 5-7 days ONLY!! Keep refrigerated.
you can also put a drop of the cod liver oil onto the eyelid. Again be careful not to reinfect the oil, so pour small amount out each time, use syringe or eyedropper and do not touch eyelid.
Always be mindful to not reinfect original mixture.
The vitamin A found in oil will stimulate healing.
Very warm compresses and oil application can be done in same sitting.

Another infusion that has shown some success with infected eye issues is eyebright and goldenseal, found in extract  formulas at health food stores. Use glycerin based formula.
add 5 drops to 1 cup pure distilled water, Add 1/4 tsp sea salt to simulate natural sodium found in tears. Store at room temp for 2 days, discard unused portion and remake as needed.
However, I might try cod liver oil and warm compresses first.

I have treated styes without antibiotics but since you started be sure to finish dose.
