Do I have an Oscar?

Question
I recently obtained a fish from a friend who said it was an oscar.  But I'm not sure.  The fish has similar characteristics, but I have not seen a picture of an oscar that looks like him.  He is about the size of a Gourami, but lacking the little "antenna"-looking things.
He has a red belly but not the spots like many oscars have. He re-arranges all my plants like all the oscar information says they like to do.  He hides but sometimes I'll catch him watching me, but if I look at him he swims away.  He came from VERY bad conditions and I am worried he is traumatized and does not have enough room in the Giant fish bowl I have him in.  If he gets any bigger, I found a Petco that says they will adopt him out.
I am also concerned because he won't eat. When I come near him, he does not seem interested in food, he hides.  I have only had him two days, though and maybe he is just traumatized by the move. And I know they like live food. But tonight, I came home and he was at the bottom not moving.  I tapped the bowl and nothing.  I had to get the net and nudge him before he swam under the bridge to hide... was he sleeping? Or is he dying?
I just want to make sure I know what kind of fish he is, so I can care for him properly.  And I wanted to know about how large a container I should have him in.  Most websites say about 3 gallons per inch or something like that.
Do you have any wisdom for me? Please tell me you do! :D
thanks
always,

ps. let me know if you would like me to send a picture of him.

Answer
I can't really tell you if it's an oscar without a picture.
But as for tank size it is reccomended that each oscar has 55 gallons of water to grow.
If they are in a small tank they will not grow and thrive like they are suppose to.And for him not doing much the first few days he probably won't.When a fish is moved to a new environment  it stresses them out for awhile.Once he get's used to his surroundings he should start moving around again.
If you need anything else don't hesitate to ask

Thank you
